Frequently Asked Questions
How is RD interest calculated?
Each monthly deposit earns compound interest for the time it stays in the account, with banks compounding quarterly. Later deposits earn less interest than earlier ones, which is why RD returns are lower than an FD of the same total amount.
RD or SIP — which is better?
An RD gives guaranteed, fixed returns and suits short-term goals. A mutual fund SIP has market risk but historically higher long-term returns. Many people use RDs for 1–3 year goals and SIPs for 5+ year goals.
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes — like FD interest, it's added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, with TDS above the annual threshold.
Can I miss a monthly RD instalment?
Banks and post offices charge a small penalty per missed instalment, and repeated defaults can close the account. The maturity figure here assumes you pay every month on time.
Is TDS deducted on RD interest?
Yes, on the same basis as an FD: 10% once interest crosses ₹40,000 in a year across your deposits with that bank, or ₹50,000 for senior citizens.
Can I withdraw from an RD before it matures?
Usually yes, with a penalty and a reduced interest rate. Post office RDs allow one partial withdrawal of up to half the balance after a year.
