Frequently Asked Questions

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time uses the common average of 200 words per minute. Actual speed varies by reader and content difficulty.

Does the character count include spaces?

Both counts are shown — total characters including spaces, and characters excluding all whitespace. Social media and form limits usually count spaces.

Is my text stored or uploaded?

No. Counting happens live in your browser and the text is never sent anywhere or saved.

What counts as a word?

Any run of characters separated by whitespace. A hyphenated word like “state-of-the-art” counts as one, and a number counts as a word. This is the same rule Word and Google Docs use, so the totals should line up with them.

Does it count words as I type, or only when I stop?

Live, on every keystroke. There is no button to press — the counts, including sentences and paragraphs, update as you write.

What is a sentence, as far as this tool is concerned?

Text ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Abbreviations like “Dr.” or “i.e.” will be miscounted as sentence endings, which is a limitation of every simple counter — treat the sentence figure as an estimate.

Is there a limit to how much text I can paste?

No fixed limit. Everything runs in your browser, so the only constraint is your device's memory; documents of tens of thousands of words are no problem.
