Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start numbering from something other than 1?
Yes. Set the starting number — useful when a cover page shouldn't count, or when the document is one chapter of something larger.
Will the numbers cover my content?
They sit in the page margin, roughly 10mm from the edge. If your document already prints close to the edge, move the number to a different corner or reduce the font size.
Which formats are available?
Plain numbers (1, 2, 3), number with total (1 / 10), 'Page 1', and 'Page 1 of 10'. The total adjusts automatically to your starting number.
Does this work on scanned PDFs?
Yes. Page numbers are drawn on top of whatever the page contains, so scans and image-only PDFs work exactly the same way.
Can I skip the cover page?
Yes. Set the starting page so numbering begins on page two, and set the starting number to 1 if you want the first numbered page to read 1 rather than 2.
Where on the page are numbers placed?
In the margin at the position you choose — bottom centre is the usual choice for reports, bottom right for anything that will be bound on the left.
