Frequently Asked Questions

Who can join APY?

Any Indian citizen aged 18 to 40 with a savings bank account and Aadhaar. Since 1 October 2022, anyone who is or has been an income-tax payer is not eligible to join.

Why does joining younger cost so much less?

Because your contributions compound for longer. Joining at 18 for a ₹5,000 pension costs ₹210 a month; joining at 40 for the same pension costs ₹1,454 — nearly seven times as much for the same benefit.

What happens to the money after I die?

The pension continues to your spouse for their lifetime. After both of you, the accumulated corpus — 170 times the monthly pension — is returned to your nominee.

Can I increase my pension amount later?

Yes. You can move up or down between the ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 slabs once a financial year, and your contribution is adjusted with the difference for the elapsed period.

What if I miss a contribution?

The account accrues a small penalty per missed month — ₹1 to ₹10 depending on the contribution size. Sustained default can lead to the account being frozen after six months and closed after two years, so keep the linked account funded.
